HEB Road Trip

The HEB Road Trip was quite an adventure! This was our first year to camp on the H.E. Butt Foundation’s camp grounds in Kerrville. We enjoyed swimming in a beautiful piece of the Frio River called Blue Hole. Together, we cooked, served, played, created tie-dye shirts, swam, tubed, sang, and learned about what it means to be a Sanctuary for The Lord.

We talked through the lyrics of a familiar prayer: “Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary- pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving I’ll be a living sanctuary for you.” We want to be a dwelling place for The Lord – purified by His sacrifice, faithful through fire. We want to lay down our own lives in order to be raised to new life in Him.

Please pray for these teens as The Spirit prompts you. Some live up to 5 hours away from us, in Corpus Christi. Some are in Caldwell, Spicewood, or Del Valle, Texas. This makes follow up a bit more complicated. We know that God had a purpose for each one in attending the HEB Road Trip, and pray that he would continue to work in each life represented. We pray that the enemy might not be allowed to de-rail their lives with any of his schemes. Lord, may their hearts be soft to your voice and obedient to your call.

94 children and around 60 leaders attended Camp Nikos this year from all around Austin. Throughout the week full of songs, outdoor activities, crafts, and group times, we talked about The King’s character and His love. He is real! We can get to know Him and hear His voice. We can trust that He will do what He says.

Bianca aims for the bullseye!

Brooke and Taya enjoy the lake!

Fishing off the dock…

I hope Karen doesn’t REALLY eat that worm… : )

Praise God with us for a great week together at camp! Thank you to each prayer warrior and financial supporter for enabling such a sweet time. There are still opportunities to participate on our website at www.mpaustin.org.

Camp Nikos 2008

Benjamin and one of his previous campers, Kevin. : )

As you can tell from this photo, Camp Nikos is HOT!! Especially in light of the recent weather forecasting, we will need you all to pray against dehydration and heat-exhaustion. The dining hall is the only spot that campers visit with A/C, and we spend all day walking the trails to different activities, singing scripture and trying to remember to drink water at every opportunity. Being thrown in the lake helps alot…

The theme for Camp this year is something different than we’ve ever done. We’re teaching about The King of Kings, and what kind of a King He is. We will have the opportunity to present life-changing truths about God this year. Our theme verse for camp is Psalm 73: 28, “I know that it’s good to be near you God… I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do!” We can KNOW THE KING.

We will teach:

1. (Tuesday, June 10th) God is real! Romans 1:19- 20, “God has shown us who He is! Since He created the world, God’s invisible qualities and his power have been clearly seen by what He has made, so that people have no excuse for not knowing Him.”

2. (Wednesday, June 11th) We can get to know God! James 4:8, “Come close to God, and He will come close to you.”

3. (Thursday, June 12th) We can learn to hear God! Romans 8:16, “God’s Spirit speaks to our spirits if we are His children.”

4. (Friday, June 13th) God is trustworthy. I Corinthians 1:9, “God is faithful. He will do what He says.”

If a child is able to accept these truths, they can approach God with confidence! Please pray that The Spirit would speak clearly to the hearts of those who are His children.

What better way is there to finish off the school year than to drench all your dearest friends? : )

We are so thankful to The LORD for this first completed after-school year at MP.

We armed ourselves with all the squirt guns, water ballons, hoses,

(and coolers of water?) we could find – and had a blast!

HOW did I not see this coming??

Here is our family: all wet, and looking forward to summer!

We missed each of our mentors and children who could not make it – Lisa, Peter, David, Tiffany, Josh, Mary, Jeremy, Allyson, Max, Luke, Jack, Jenni, Ms. Cookie, Angela, Tyquise and Irene – we’ll wet you next year! : )

Thanks to Joy for all the photos – how did you manage to stay so dry?!

Possibilities…

If you attended our banquet last night, you heard Tim Jr. mention that we are in the initial stages of looking at what it would take to establish a small private school at NYACC (our building at 12th & Chicon St.)

Over the last 15 years, Mission: Possible! Austin has noticed a trend in our time spent with children. The organization was founded when Tim Sr. and his wife Cindy fell in love with the inner-city children they spent time with through Mission: Waco. They began seeking out children in the same situations here in Austin.

From there, God began to grow and mature the organization to include opportunities for the children to escape their home environments for short periods of time, to experience his love untainted, and freely. Thus the Nikos camping ministry was born. The word “nikos” means ‘a means of victory.’

“The Tim’s” and I sat down to begin planning our Nikos summer camp a month or so ago. We discussed our purpose and calling, changes we had seen in the lives of some children dear to us, and the burden we felt to be able to invest more significant time in their lives. We looked back at the hours spent in the life of a child on a yearly basis, and noticed how God was bringing us up and nearer to their hearts -from 40 or so hours a year in the housing developments years ago, to over 2,000 possible hours a year through camps, middle school programs, after-school, mentoring, and monthly CrossTrainers programs.

What kind of impact could be made in 8 hours each day, 5 days a week?! What kinds of generational changes might we see? Could these children be part of the purpose God has in our strategic geographical placement, on the “worst corner of Austin, Texas?”

th_prayer_hands.jpg

We called around 20 of the most qualified people we could think of to help us determine what exactly we were talking about, and what it would take to get there. Some have experience with children in a church setting, some are public school teachers, one was on a school-founding committee. Some had attended private schools, taught at private schools, low socio-economic area schools, or home-schooled their own children. We had perspectives from bilingual education, special education, TEA policy knowledge, and the Texas Home-school Coalition.

Imagine a small school, starting with preK, Kinder, maybe 1st grade students. 8 students per class. These classes would be made up of children from East Austin communities, and children from families who wish to invest in other families – and instill in their own children The culture of The Kingdom.

Our school would be all about “Cultivating the culture of The Kingdom” – God’s purpose and intention in relationship to mankind, and mankind’s relationship and fellowship to one another. This school would be different from any other Christian school we’ve found -with focus on a Kingdom environment and foundation infused with exceptional academics.

The children would be taught with an eternal view (Kingdom perspective) of the world and education. They would learn the heart of God the Father for them:

He is real.

He can be known.

He can be heard.

He can be trusted.

They might spend 2 days a week learning outdoors at Pole Cat Hollow, 15 minutes away. They might participate in some of our art ministry, drama ministry, after-school program, or mentoring. They might grow to love learning as they grow to love Our Teacher, our Father. Believers around the city might have the opportunity to invest in the next generation in phenomenal ways…

Would you pray about these possibilities with us? We have felt the promptings of The Spirit to initiate these things. We need clear direction for a time-line. We need volunteer staff (teachers, mentors, food service, janitorial…) We need qualified leadership, and families and children who share the same dream to participate. This possibility has potential like none we’ve ever seen!

We entrust this process and these children to The Faithful One, and await with expectation to praise Him for the miracles we may see…

Our BFASP family

Here are some of our Big Fish After School crew.

Two of our sweet girls went to Kansas over Christmas vacation and have not yet returned. Please pray for Nay Nay and Destiny and their mom Rachel, whatever situation they may be in now. These girls have been in our programming with MP and the REALife Center before us for 3 years and we miss them very much.

We have recently welcomed two new friends, Alicia and DaJuan. These siblings were recruited by Charlsetta (in the light blue above). This picture was taken before they came, but we are thrilled to include them into our little family. We are praying for 4 more children and passing out our fliers in Spanish and English at their elementary schools.

Although they bear heavy burdens, our friends are learning to talk to God – a God who is in control, and who holds them through the tough things they must walk through. 11 outstanding volunteers our consistently pouring into their lives and teaching them about academics, friendship, life, stewardship, joy, and Jesus Christ. We laugh, sing, dance, play, work, think, hug, pray, cry, read, and love each other. We invite you to visit us any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday that AISD has school between 3-5 pm!

The theme for MP’s banquet this year is based on a prayer of St. Francis. The lyrics of the song below articulate who we want to be in the lives of each person we come in contact with.

Lord, Make us instruments of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are your instruments of peace.

Where there is hatred, we will show his love
Where there is injury, we will never judge
Where there is striving, we will speak his peace
To the millions crying for release,
We will be his instruments of peace

Lord, Make us instruments of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are your instruments of peace.

Where there is blindness, we will pray for sight
where there is darkness, we will shine his light
Where there is sadness, we will bear their grief
To the millions crying for relief,
We will be your instruments of peace.
