Ropes CourseEvery year, the Nikos Camping ministry at Mission:Possible! has a Spring Retreat that happens during the first weekend of Spring Break. The campers came this year on Saturday morning, with most of the leaders arriving the day before. Camp extended through the weekend, ending on Monday just after lunch. Because of the cold weather and rain, there were several campers that didn’t come, but we had a few last minute children that came in their stead. We also had an overwhelming turnout of volunteer leaders this year, making the ratio of leaders to campers very good. This allowed the leaders to devote individual time to each camper and made the first step in building relationships a little bit easier.

The theme for camp this year was the “Nikos Olympics.” We talked about running the race for the Lord, and the campers were able to participate in a lot of fun activities that revolved around the theme. We even had a closing ceremony that the campers were able to perform a “movement” routine to music that they really enjoyed.

The Lord’s hand was evident as the leaders and campers interacted throughout the camp, and God provided just the right amount of adults to run games, activities, and serve food throughout the weekend. It was an exciting and praise filled weekend that all involved will not soon forget.

The camp formerly known as “MUDD camp” stood true to it’s old name! Our camping grounds, Pole Cat Hollow, have come a long way in development since that first MUDD camp – but the weather traditionally provides some mud just before the Spring Retreat for making memories and messes.

Thank you to all who prayed about the cold and rainy weather! God was certainly in control and had all just as He wanted. Because of the weather on Friday night and Saturday morning, we saw a significant turn-over with our registration list as we picked children up from different spots. This made logistics a bit more challenging as our campers arrived. But God allowed us to have all the kids assigned to groups before they pulled in, making their welcome moments more smooth and less stressed as their group leaders came right up to the bus, van, and car doors to kick off the weekend together. We only had one sprinkle shower on Sunday morning and even had a little sunshine on Monday!

This retreat included MP’s very first ever Nikos Olympic Closing Ceremony! We had fun with the Olympic theme by having the children perform for an audience from Grace Covenant Church on Sunday night. They learned a movement routine to the catchy song “Final Countdown” choreographed by Caron Gibson and coached by Leece Naxera during their activity rotation. The kids enjoyed being in the spot light, and smiled as their four groups rotated on Pole Cat’s new track. (We are working on getting the video up on our website for you to see!)

I wish you could’ve heard the children’s voices as they declared our theme verse together: “Since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd, watching our life of faith, let’s throw off everything that slows us down and the sin that so easily trips us up, and run with perseverance the race God set out for us! Hebrews 12:1” (Nikos version)

To close the ceremony, we handed out “gold medals” to the children based on team achievements and sang a marathon of Nikos Camp Songs together.

We praise God for everyone who came out to help prep and serve meals, run activities, serve as group leaders and adult staff, and for those who covered us in prayer! May God have his way with our hearts as He calls the ones He has in mind to continue in relationship with the little ones that came to this retreat!

Fall Retreat '08

Well, they all came and went… MP fed 125 at our wilderness camp-out site during this short 2 day, 1 night camp out. God brought so many teens and adults to love on the children – enough for less than a 1:2 ratio, and we didn’t even have a drop of rain! (VERY different from retreats past, formerly known as MUDD camp…)

There were several moments during this retreat which blessed me deeply. A 9 year old girl named Karen and I sat together on the gravel floor of the outdoor kitchen after she had had to be rinsed nearly from head to toe because she had rubbed a poison ivy leaf all over herself on purpose. Over years of contact with Karen, she has just started to respond to me because she knows that I love her.

Margaret (on the right in the picture above), brought her small pink Bible to me. “I’m reading in John. I tried to read on the bus on the way here, but it was too bumpy,” she said, beaming up at me. I was able to stop and pray over her and her Bible. Lord, take hold of Margaret’s heart as she reads this Bible, and speak clearly to her spirit as your child… what a sweet moment.

After a story-telling and discussion of the life of Joseph, Kimberly came up alone to ask me why God allows bad things to happen to us if He is trustworthy. It was an amazing opportunity to speak the hope of maturity in Him, of His love and sovereignty, and against the lies of the enemy to such a young soul!

My favorite moment of the retreat has to be Saturday night, when Tim Jr. was reviewing the material the children learned this summer at Camp Nikos – God is real, He can be known and heard, He can be trusted. At the end, he mentioned one of the promises that we can trust God to keep. He started the words, “You will seek me,…” and children’s voices overtook his, singing, “…You will find me, when you seek me, with all of your heart. Jeremiah 29:13, Jeremiah 29:13,” to the tune of the Mexican Hat dance. I could not hold back the tears as I recognized that this promise had been written on their hearts. God, you are so good!

HEB Road Trip

The HEB Road Trip was quite an adventure! This was our first year to camp on the H.E. Butt Foundation’s camp grounds in Kerrville. We enjoyed swimming in a beautiful piece of the Frio River called Blue Hole. Together, we cooked, served, played, created tie-dye shirts, swam, tubed, sang, and learned about what it means to be a Sanctuary for The Lord.

We talked through the lyrics of a familiar prayer: “Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary- pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving I’ll be a living sanctuary for you.” We want to be a dwelling place for The Lord – purified by His sacrifice, faithful through fire. We want to lay down our own lives in order to be raised to new life in Him.

Please pray for these teens as The Spirit prompts you. Some live up to 5 hours away from us, in Corpus Christi. Some are in Caldwell, Spicewood, or Del Valle, Texas. This makes follow up a bit more complicated. We know that God had a purpose for each one in attending the HEB Road Trip, and pray that he would continue to work in each life represented. We pray that the enemy might not be allowed to de-rail their lives with any of his schemes. Lord, may their hearts be soft to your voice and obedient to your call.

Howdy all, its been a little while since I made an entry. On Sunday, June 29, Mission: Possible! took about 30 campers with us down to H.E. Butt Foundation camp near Leakey, Texas for the annual “Road Trip” outing. It was a less structured time than Camp Nikos, with an emphasis on “family time” and relationships with some of the older kids. We were there for three full days, coming back to Austin on the 3rd of July.

Everyone seemed to have a great time. We slept in primitive cabins with no AC, but the Lord blessed us with incredibly cool weather for this time of year. We even got a few showers some days. The foundation is on the Frio river, and our particular campsite was on a beautiful stretch of river surrounded by cliffs with a swimming area called The Bluehole. It was so picturesque and incredibly fun. We spent a lot of time swimming, hiking, and hanging out playing volleyball and basketball. We also took one day to do a float down the Frio River in inner tubes. The water was lower than normal for the float, but it was still a good time.

The purpose of the time was to build relationships with the kids and allow them to see and hear about Christ living in our lives. Tim Jr. was able to share many mysteries of the gospel and of God’s purposes for mankind. Many of the kids really engaged and asked some great questions. Its my prayer that they will continue to seek the Lord and that He would reveal himself to them wherever they are.

94 children and around 60 leaders attended Camp Nikos this year from all around Austin. Throughout the week full of songs, outdoor activities, crafts, and group times, we talked about The King’s character and His love. He is real! We can get to know Him and hear His voice. We can trust that He will do what He says.

I hope Karen doesn’t REALLY eat that worm… : )

Praise God with us for a great week together at camp! Thank you to each prayer warrior and financial supporter for enabling such a sweet time. There are still opportunities to participate on our website at www.mpaustin.org.

The last two days of camp seemed to go by very quickly. The campers and leaders really got accustomed to the daily schedule and things seemed to go very smoothly. Each day starts with breakfast, and then an activity rotation. After lunch and two more activities, the whole camp gathers below the dining hall for a time that the campers can display a “talent” or goof around. It is very encouraging for the kids to get recognition and applause for something they can do. After dinner and a time of group games, the night service is the last event before bedtime.

As I have mentioned before, we have been showing videos with leader interviews about our theme for the day. I hope to be able to link to them or post them at some point. Also during the night service is a slide show which goes through pictures of the kids at their various activities during the day. The campers love to see their faces up on the screen and yell and cheer for their friends. There is also a time where our “light lady” recognizes campers that did an exceptional job during the week. They get to be drawn on with highlighter and then “shine” under black lights. The basis for light lady is for the kids have their light shine, from Matthew 5:16. Tim Jr. talks briefly to the campers before they finally go to bed. I really felt that the campers were able to connect to the words that Tim spoke, and it was clear that many were thinking about the topics as evidence from their conversations with leaders and their prayer requests.

Other than a few wasp stings, and one little boy that had an infected cut, there were very few medical issues all week long. Lots of kids were able to catch some big fish during their fishing time, and the new archery slot was by and large a big success. The waterfront is home to three activities, being fishing, canoeing and swimming. In the swimming area is also a blob, which is a lot of fun to launch people off of into the water. On Friday I helped “double blob” a few leaders with Sean, the youth pastor from Hope in the City. It was good stuff.
The interesting thing about Camp Nikos is that is it a revealing time for all who participate. I know the Lord taught me many things over the week. I pray that He will continue to reveal himself to me so that I will know Him intimately, just as we spoke to the campers about the very same thing. I pray that I will be able to hear His voice. And I pray that I will be able to trust Him in everything.
Praise our King! For He is real and wants to be known! He can be heard, and can be trusted!

Nikos: mini-update

First of all I want to apologize for the lack of posts and pictures over the last two days and yesterday. The internet connection was less than reliable, and things were really busy as well. Over all, the camp went extremely smoothly and was a lot of fun. I’ll try to make a more detailed couple of posts later today and/or tomorrow with details!

Yesterday we talked about how God can be and wants to be known by his people. The theme verse was James 4:8. The campers and leaders are starting to form some meaningful relationships as they discuss the theme and participate together through daily activities. It’s great to see them walking down trails together, singing verses and clearly becoming comfortable as good pals. Most of the guys really enjoy fishing, swimming, and ropes. It was really hot, but everyone is being careful to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade when possible.

During the dinner service, some of the leaders performed a skit to a Lifehouse song called “Everything.” You can find it on youtube, and I’ll try to make a link later as well. It is a powerful representation of the role of Christ in a believer’s life, even through their struggles in a lost and sin-filled world. The campers watched very attentively, and hopefully the explanation of the skit spoke to them on a deeper level.
Continue to pray for meaningful and eternal conversations among the leaders and campers. Pray that the leaders would not simply get through the week on their own power and will, but that they would surrender all to Christ. Pray that as they begin to tire and lose strength that they would seek the Lord and learn from Him, even amidst the trials and joys of this week. Also pray for one little boy named Erik. He struggles with some anger issues, but it looks like he might be turning around today. Also, the girls have been having some drama within different cabins, so pray that the Lord would do a mighty work and bring His children to Him.
